Death toll from Morocco earthquake rises to 1,037, more than 1,204 injured, the vast majority in Al-Haouz, the epicentre, and Taroudant provinces. In the middle G20 Summit, India PM Modi says ready to 'offer all possible assistance' to Morocco. African Union officially takes its seat at the G20 high table. India Foreign Minister Jaishankar brings Comoros President (AU Chair) as PM Modi welcomes him. South African President's Spokesperson lauds Indian Presidency for inclusion of African Union in G20 and Modi’s caring about Morocco tragedy - earthquake.
1 Hour after earthquake, 123 casualties. 2 Hours after earthquake, 151 casualties. 5 hours after earthquakes, 296 casualties. 9 Hours after earthquake, 632 casualties. Now, 12 hours after earthquakes, 820 casualties. 16 Hours after earthquake, 1,037 casualties.
Worst earthquake this year after Turkiye in February (around 56,000 died in total Turkiye and Syria). Unfortunately, estimates with new intensities look worse than the original ones, with around median 3,000 fatalities expected (Range: 1,300 - 12,000). Morocco could withdraw its occupation forces from Western Sahara and use the vast amounts of money it spends to carry out the war and occupation to take care of its injured and homeless citizens, and compensate those who have loved their lost ones, but it won't. Same situation Turkiye government, must decrease presence in entire Kurdistan, because February earthquake estimate US$34-40 billion in direct physical damage. Turkiye is ready to dispatch 265 emergency workers and 1,000 tents to Morocco, awaiting confirmation from Rabat. Morocco’s earthquakes estimate direct physical damage US$2 billion, and for comparison, Morocco’s draft 2022 budget in total spending to 519 billion dirhams (US$57 billion).
Powerful earthquake hits Morocco around 11pm local time, preliminary magnitude around 6.8 Richter. Earthquakes of this size in the region are uncommon, but not unexpected. Since 1900, there have been no earthquakes M6 (magnitude 6) and larger within 500 km of this earthquake, and only 9 M5 (magnitude 5) and larger earthquakes. The quake struck in Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range shortly after 11 p.m. local time at the relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), USGS said, with the epicenter located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city of some 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination.
The epicenter is a region that already suffers from poor infrastructure. Survivors of the devastating 1960 earthquake that left several thousands dead will be reliving a horrific nightmare. This is heartbreaking. Tolls expected to rise further. Several buildings collapsed completely, hospitals had to be evacuated. Large numbers of people refusing to return to their homes for fear of aftershocks and further collapse.
In the old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, some residents were injured as buildings and city walls were damaged and partially collapsed.
