Based on satellite imagery and video footage from air and ground, it unfortunately appears another major wildland-urban interface fire disaster has occurred on the island of Maui. Lots of structure-to- structure spread apparent amid very dry & windy conditions. Lahaina is a small town in western Maui -- once a whaling village. Most of the building are entirely made of wood, and many date to the early 20th century. This is dangerous and tragic.
An apocalyptic scene is unfolding due to the fires raging across island. Wildfire has engulfed businesses on Front Street in downtown Lahaina in West Maui, home to 12,000 people. The Coast Guard is responding to people who were forced to go into the ocean due to the flames.

Hundreds of homes and businesses feared destroyed" by fires. At least 20 people seriously injured in Maui. Local government to evacuate, plans to fly 4,000 tourists out of Maui today to Oahu. They will be put up at the Hawaii Convention Center.
There was an elementary school close by if I remember correctly
The loss of Lahaina is terrible. It had some buildings that date from the time Hawaii was an independent kingdom and it was the capital. It was now a charming tourist village with whale watching and snorkeling boats. Including some scientific studies of whales.
