Turmoil, chaos in the entire LATAM / Latin America unstoppable. After the Peru crisis, also months ago riot in Brasilia Brazil, today from Ecuador. With 6 votes in favor the Constitutional Court has given the green light to the admissibility ruling. There will be an impeachment trial against President Guillermo Lasso alleged his corruption.
Being "impeached" means different things for US and (most) Latin American countries. And this is causing confusion. Debating the impeachment of Ecuadorian Pres Guillermo Lasso while overlooking an important linguistic distinction: In the US being "impeached" just means a president has had the admissibility of the charges recognised and sent to trial in the Senate. If the Senate decides in favour of the charges, the president is "convicted" and removed from office. The language is rather different in most Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries that have impeachment proceedings. In short: Impeached = convicted and removed.
"Impeached" in these countries does not mean being subjected to a trial, but rather being convicted in the proceedings and permanently removed from power. Having the lower house of congress (or the supreme court) decide on the admissibility of the process is not being impeached. This is important to understand the current state of affairs in Ecuador. Guillermo Lasso was impeached in the US sense, or has had charges ruled as admissible and will be submitted to impeachment proceedings, in the Latin American sense.

Con 6 votos a favor y 3 en contra, los jueces de la Corte Suprema Constitucion Ecuador deciden que la Asamblea Ecuador trámite el juicio político contra Guillermo Lasso. Con esto, el trámite seguirá su curso en la Asamblea.

Corte Suprema de Ecuador abre paso al juicio político contra el presidente Guillermo Lasso, por actos de corrupción. Según la asambleísta del oficialismo Ana Belén Cordero, el plazo para que la Corte Constitucional se pronuncie sobre el eventual juicio político al presidente.
Lasso, asegura que la democracia se encuentra amenazada en su país y que el crimen organizado transnacional ha contaminado a actores políticos y a una parte del sistema judicial.
