Freeport McMoran issue, published hour ago on TEMPO MAGAZINE - ENGLISH VERSION, different with local / bahasa Indonesia / Indonesia language.

Local version, published earlier / around 28 hours earlier than ENGLIS VERSION Tempo. About Head of anticorruption to be suspect of some graft.

As a loyal reader of [one of oldest investigation - magazine in ASEAN] TEMPO Magazine / Majalah Tempo, actually very rare when the INDONESIA VERSION of its magazine displayed a different main topic if compared with the ENGLISH VERSION.

Before the coronavirus, the INDONESIA VERSION of Tempo Magazine published every [around] 5am on Sunday [Jakarta time] in the website, and te ENGLISH VERSION of Tempo Magazine every Tuesday around 5am Jakarta time. After the coronavirus, INDONESIA versional published around 8 - 9am Sunday Jakarta time, and the ENGLISH VERSION published every Monday 10 - 11am Monday Jakarta time in the website.

As I rechecked every single magazine collection since 2012 - 2023 / today, only 3 times TEMPO set a ‘different front page theme’ for INDONESIA VERSION AND ENGLISH. The 3rd, is today.

In the Indonesia version [since last Sunday], TEMPO chose a blockbuster case, that the Head anti corruption of Indonesia to be a Corruptor, suspect of some graft by a former minister.

But for the ENGLISH VERSION, Tempo chose another blockbuster; FREEPORT MCMORAN in Indonesia.

The Indonesian government / Joko Widodo administration, currently only remaining in office for next 11 months [ended October 19th, 2024 next year] promises to extend Freeport’s permit if the company releases more shares [divestation but specific only Indonesia government can buy].

As I heard:

Although the entire world [focused now on] Gaza and lookalike forget about Ukraine - Russia war, INDONESIA GOVERNMENT especially President Joko Widodo has a ‘two / double track mission’, alongside begging Biden about [to push ceasefire / push Israeli PM Netanyahu for ceasefire].

After [Jokowi] meet up with Biden in the White House 10 days ago, and with a lot manouvre of diplomatic especially from Spain, Belgium, and Irish, 13 hours ago [9pm TEL AVIV / 9pm Gaza] Netanyahu says he would agree to extend the ceasefire if the deal includes the release of 10 hostages daily. Israel agreed to extend the ceasefire in exchange for exchanging 10 people kidnapped every day. Israel and Hamas swapped 41 Israelis and foreigners for 78 Palestinians from Israeli jails in two batches of a prisoner swap carried out in the first and second days of a four-day humanitarian pause. Third batch exchange hostage already done 14 hours ago.

Another mission for Jokowi of course is to lure Biden, so a lot of US companies invest in IKN NUSANTARA - NEW CAPITAL CITY of Indonesia, and actually lure the US government to build new embassy building in NEW CAPITAL CITY in the heart Borneo / Kalimantan.

Four U.S. Tech Companies, IKN Authority Collaborate in Nusantara Capital City Development. The four American technology companies that have signed MoUs with OIKN [Otorita IKN - Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (Nusantara Capital Authority)] are Cisco, Autodesk, Microsoft, and Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri).

The [implicit] challenge. Like several countries, the US government, with the new “Excellence” program, the Department of State Overseas Building Operations (OBO), already completed expansion of the US Embassy in Jakarta in 2018. Other countries even completed expansion [in Jakarta] earlier than the US government [France, UK, Australia, South Korea].

Per Overseas Building Operations OBO and UFC guidelines, the Chancery is designed for Progressive Collapse, which provides enhanced structural resilience and ductility for life safety in the event of a catastrophe.  It’s still questioned about the prospect to build a new compound / new embassy building again in a new capital city if a lot of countries have already expanded or renovated the current building in Jakarta, which already cost US$100 million or bigger. 

The cost of NUSANTARA - new capital city of Indonesia will be [around] US$300 billion at least until 2045, the 100 years of Indonesian Independence.  

Freeport McMoran actually ‘built’ a city from scratch since it started the operation in the 70s, named TEMBAGAPURA, a very western-style of mining town. Arguably [in total revenue and investment] Freeport McMoran to be the biggest foreign revenue for Indonesia [on a complicated calculation  share of revenue, annually]. Both the US and Indonesia have the same bigger picture: Freeport presence in Indonesia is strategic, irreplaceable, and must continue at whatever cost. 

Because it is very crucial for ‘Jokowi’ Joko Widodo to ensure the development of a new capital city, he try fix everything as he can. If the US government, which already has a huge compound in Jakarta [already renovating the US Embassy building], agrees to build [again] new embassy in new capital city, this is a major - significant trigger for both foreign governments and foreign companies to invest in Capital City.
