Carter’s presidency was viewed as largely unsuccessful at the time - unfair, in retrospect. He brokered peace in the Middle East, for one thing. But he wasn’t an effective negotiator with Congress. Still, he always wins hands down as the president Americans would most like to have a dinner conversation with. At a time of dangerous cynicism, he proved that someone with integrity can restore dignity to that office.

@julie : he voluntarily supervised my/our (Indonesia) 1999 election, just 1 year after 1998 riot. After democracy was restored until now we have Jokowi (both Biden and Xi Jinping very respect to Jokowi), in 32 years (1966-1998) democracy put on the trash by regime (named Soeharto).
