Reno Nevada 3.08pm
5.2 magnitude earthquake followed by at least 2 aftershocks (3.1 and 3.6) hits north of Los Angeles while they also go through Hurricane Hilary.
The epicenter of the quake was in Ojai, between Santa Barbara and Ventura, and it occurred along the Sisar fault, USGS data showed.
There were no immediate reports of damage, the Ventura County Sheriff said in a social media post.
Shaking was felt throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities, according to a USGS tool that allows residents to self-report their experience. About 50 miles away in Valencia, the quake felt like a slow roll, lasting about 20 seconds. Residents reported a slow-rolling effect in the Hollywood area, as well.
At least two aftershocks — measuring 3.1 and 3.6 — followed the initial quake.
At least 9 million people were under flash-flood warnings.
If you felt the Ojai earthquake, share your experience at:

the data can be used to better understand seismic waves in southern Calfiornia.

Hilary is the first tropic storm to hit Southern California in 84 years. It's not just California watching the tropics, there's an area to watch near the Bahamas that will move into the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical development can happen fast in the Gulf this time of year so keep a close eye on this one. At very least we could see beneficial rain in Texas.
Not only first ever storm hit Southern California in last 84 years, Hurricane Hilary (has entered California) is first tropical storm to move over state since Nora in 1997.
It has peak winds of 50 mph but "catastrophic" flooding remains the hazard of greatest concern.
1997 Nora: Hurricane Nora was the first tropical cyclone to enter the Continental United States from the Pacific Ocean since Hurricane Lester in 1992. Nora was the fourteenth named tropical cyclone and the seventh hurricane of the 1997 Pacific hurricane season.
Hurricane Nora impacted the majority of Mexico's Pacific-facing coast, as well as parts of the Southwestern United States, including California, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.
Overall the system was responsible for two deaths in Mexico and either three or four fatalities in the United States, as well as at least $150 million in damages.
Highest winds of Nora (1997): 130 mph (215 km/h)
Alberto M. Carvalho MedM, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District: LAUSD campuses will be closed tomorrow. Tropical Storm Hilary will peak overnight, leaving no time to inspect schools before classes begin Monday. He said the bus fleet cannot safely operate in high wind speeds.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Ruth Bass says the city has opened the most emergency shelters for unhoused people since early 2020. Again, tells people to call 311 for downed lines, flooding and traffic issues during the storm.
Chief LA Fire Department Kristin Crowley says they are experienced an elevated number of calls. No reports of injuries or significant damage yet. Swift water rescue teams searched 2 cars found in LA river and then spotted someone in the river. The person was rescued. So far about 5,000 customers without power according to DWP - mostly in Boyle Heights and Hollywood.
Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Janice Kay Hahn says there has been non-stop preparation and “all hands on deck” response. She signed an emergency declaration for LA County today. People should stay out of the ocean for the next 72 hours. People in LA County (not city) should call 211. Hahn also said the main concern with Catalina Island is flooding at the power plant that could cause a major outage. She said most residents have chosen to stay. The last boat left this afternoon.
National Weather Service says Los Angeles is expected to experience the peak of the storm's rainfall between now and 9 p.m. Showers are expected through the night into Monday, with showers tapering off during the day.
Flash Flood Warning until 8:30 p.m. (with massive debris):
Coachella Valley
Desert Hot Springs
Palm Springs
Cathedral City
Rancho Mirage
Palm Desert
(Palm Spring, around 6pm local time)
It’s been frustrating to realise the human & economic toll of ultra-extreme weather events related to climate change, & yet have it not part of the political conversation.
A deeply dysfunctional political system - a reason for global concern.
Thousand lakes across globally (not only Indonesia) to its lowest level.
July 2023 as Hottest Month on record ever since 1880.
More than 36 million acres of land in Canada has burned in wildfires, and hundred thousand acres in Tenerife Spain, in Northern Greece, in Lahaina Hawaii).
Big flood in Pakistan and China.
Now Hurricane Hilary, again, first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years.
Deadly floodwaters inundated streets across Mexico’s arid Baja California on Sunday as Tropical Storm Hilary moved ashore carrying torrential rain into Southern California, and concerns mounted that flash floods could strike in places as far north as Idaho that rarely get such heavy rain. The city of Palm Springs declared a local emergency due to the storm. Multiple roads in the city are flooded.
Hilary made landfall along the Mexican coast in a sparsely populated area about 150 miles south of Ensenada, on a path to hit mudslide-prone Tijuana Sunday evening, threatening the improvised homes that cling to hillsides just south of the U.S. border.
In Salton City storm water has forced a gas station to stop pumping fuel due to flooding. Road conditions have started to worsen, with some roads closed altogether. Third gas station between Salton city and Meccca that has been shut off due to flooding. Lots of people trying to get gas and finding pump not working.
