After historic Bali, now every time (news about) China - U.S. issues mentioned “BALI”, it means Biden - Xi Jinping in Gran Melia Bali, around 15 hours before kickoff G20 Summit in Indonesia, 2022. “BALI” now same popular about diplomatic issues as “LISBON” for EU (Lisbon Treaty), “BUCHAREST” (crucial meeting / NATO Summit 2008, which, still postponed Ukraine membership, just 4 months before Russia invaded Georgia), “PARIS” (UNFCCC 2015, Climate Change issues).
FM / Secretary of State Blinken visit Beijing to meet President Xi Jinping (also FM and former FM: FM Qin Gang and former FM Wang Yi) on 18-19 June. Frustrated that Xi Jinping says NO about (initiative) “RED PHONE”, “HOTLINE” between two superpowers, just around 19 hours after Blinken meet Xi Jinping, in “Dinner-Fundraising for 2024 Election” Biden says “Xi Jinping is dictator.” June 26, Blinken himself say yes, Xi Jinping is dictator. Tension between two superpowers high again.
So, in the middle ASEAN Summit, 17 hours ago Blinken meet Wang Yi in Jakarta Indonesia. Until I write it, Blinken and Wang Yi still in Jakarta (DC 11.04pm July 13 / Jakarta 10.04am July 14). US State Department official tells reporters that Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang did not attend ASEAN in Indonesia due to an unspecified "health issue"; Secretary State Blinken met instead with Wang Yi. According to foreign journo in Beijing and (myself) recheck appearance of Qin Gang, last time Qing Gang on the public is June 23, 2023. U.S. reconnaissance jet flew over the Taiwan Strait on Thursday in local time, Navy says, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken met top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Indonesia. U.S. military “flies, sails and operates anywhere international law allows,” it stressed.

The discussions on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Indonesia on Thursday came one day after Microsoft accused hackers linked to China of accessing the emails of US and other Western officials. Kenneth Weinstein, Japan Chair at Hudson Institute, raised U.S. participation in Trans-Pacific Partnership as priority issue. A strategic case needed to be made for it “as an instrument that will allow us to compete more effectively with China,” he said.
The State Department said Blinken and Wang had a “candid and constructive” exchange.
“The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open channels of communication to clarify US interests across a wide range of issues and to responsibly manage competition by reducing the risk of misperception and miscalculation,” spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.
Citing an unidentified US official, Blinken told Wang that Washington would hold hackers who target US citizens “accountable”. In Pentagon 31 hours ago, top Pentagon official for Indo-Pacific Dr. Ratner met Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng at the Defense Department on Wednesday, Pentagon said in a statement, as military-to-military talks have been stalled for a while. Until I write it, Ambassador Xi Feng not yet uploaded his meeting with Dr. Ratner. Ambassador Xie choose to upload his meeting with Indonesia Ambassador. Ambassador Xie actually very active in twitter and (repeatedly) in same day about his meeting, he immediately uploaded on twitter.
Beijing has vehemently denied involvement in the hacking operation reported by Microsoft and called the US the “world’s biggest hacking empire and global cyberthief”. Since February 2023 before spy balloon incident, U.S. and China sides quietly try to create “another BALI moment” in San Francisco next November. This year, U.S. is APEC Chairs.
The episode risks sparking further animosity between the two nations, which have been at odds over numerous issues in recent years, including trade, the status of Taiwan, China’s claims in the South China Sea and an ongoing US push against growing Chinese influence in the Asia-Pacific.
Ties were further strained this year when the US shot down what it said was a Chinese spy balloon that had crossed its territory. China insisted that the aircraft was a weather balloon that drifted off course.
But leaders in Washington and Beijing have stressed that they are not seeking confrontation or a new Cold War despite the intensifying competition, and a number of top US officials have travelled to Beijing in recent weeks in a push to address those tensions.
Zelensky and his ire were the center of attention during NATO’s summit in Vilnius. But NATO’s decision to devote more time and attention on Asia shouldn’t be overlooked. This drift isn’t smart for the (NATO) Alliance.
Connecting Europe to Asia is a new fad. Stoltenberg has spent years repeating the phrase that the two regions are inextricably linked politically and economically. The ROK and Japan attended the NATO summit for a second year in a row. Tokyo came away with a partnership deal. On the other side is Macron, who bluntly says that NATO is by definition a North Atlantic alliance and warns that getting into Asian security matters will strain NATO’s resources, divert its attention, and worsen the West’s relations with China.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Louis Yellen also said last week that she had held “productive” talks with Chinese officials during a trip to Beijing, adding that ties between the two nations are on “surer footing” as a result of the dialogue.
US climate envoy John Forbes Kerry is also set to visit China next week.
On Thursday, the State Department said Blinken used the meeting with Wang “to advance US interests and values”. It also said the top US diplomat raised concerns shared by the US and its allies regarding Chinese actions without offering further details.
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and PRC Director of the CCP Central Foreign Affairs Office Wang Yi met in Jakarta, Indonesia on July 13, 2023.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open channels of communication to clarify U.S. interests across a wide range of issues and to responsibly manage competition by reducing the risk of misperception and miscalculation. This is what the world expects of the United States and the PRC.
The Secretary and Director Wang had candid and constructive discussions on a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues, including on areas of difference and potential areas of cooperation. The Secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The Secretary used the meeting to advance U.S. interests and values, to directly raise concerns shared by the United States and allies and partners regarding PRC actions, and advocate for progress on transnational challenges that affect people in the United States, the PRC, and around the world.
He made clear that the United States, together with our allies and partners, will advance our vision for a free, open, and rules-based international order. The two sides agreed to maintain open channels of communication in the weeks and months ahead.
