Azerbaijan removed the tank which symbolised the Armenian victory of first Karabakh war that stood at the entrance to Shusha. Armenian FM at the UN General Assembly says "Azerbaijan’s intention is to complete the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh." Armenia's PM to Armenians, told "At this moment, our assessment is that there is no direct threat to the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh." Armenian and Greek lobbyist Sen. Bob Menendez (still not found Menendez role for Azerbaijjan, yet) and his wife are indicted on federal bribery charges by the US Department of Justice.
In sidelines of UN General Assembly, Turkiye President Erdogan says Armenia’s Pashinyan didn’t have anything to do with latest tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh. “This has nothing to do with Armenian state either. This is partly an issue related to the marauding Armenian team in Karabakh. Their attempt to hold a self declared presidential election in their own way seriously disturbed both Pashinyan and Azerbaijan.”
Pashinyan cuts through the propaganda and says “Information on social networks about mass casualties among the population of Nagorno-Karabakh is not true.” “Azerbaijani troops had not entered Stepanakert.” “There is no direct threat to the Armenian population in Karabakh.” Meanwhile mass protests outside the Armenian Parliament against Pashinyan continue. Very clear that Russians are backing the overthrow of his government.
Nagorno-Karabakh separatists were expected to lay down their arms on Saturday under an agreement reached with the Azerbaijan government following its lightning military offensive this week.
Moscow confirmed that the rebels had surrendered the first weapons on Friday and that the process is expected to continue through the weekend, with the help of Russian peacekeepers.
Germany meanwhile called for the rights of the residents of the mountainous region to be guaranteed, as international concerns grew over the plight of civilians there.
Nagorno-Karabakh has been at the centre of more than three decades of conflict between rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan since the Soviet Union collapsed. About 120,000 ethnic Armenians live in the South Caucasus enclave, which is recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan but had largely been under ethnic Armenian control since 1994.
The fighting has been marked by abuses on both sides and there are fears of a new refugee crisis.
Speaking during a government meeting in the capital Yerevan on Friday, the Armenian prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, said Armenia would welcome ethnic Armenians who lived in the breakaway region but mass resettlement would only happen if it became impossible for Karabakh Armenians to remain there.
Baku is the second country for gas exports to Italy in 2023, second only to Algeria, in the wake to reduce dependence from Russia oil and gas after Ukraine - Rusia war.
International pressure has mounted on Azerbaijan to reopen the only road leading to Armenia, dubbed the Lachin Corridor, so supplies and people can move in and out. Hungary blocks EU-27 statement regarding Nagorno-Karabakh. For Armenians it's certainly not a surprise. The 26 other nations supported it though.
The separatists have said they are in Russian-mediated talks with Azerbaijan to organise the withdrawal process and the return of civilians displaced by the fighting. They say they are discussing how citizens’ access to and from Nagorno-Karabakh would work.
This week’s lightning offensive by Azerbaijani forces left tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians cut off from electricity and other basics in the disputed enclave. Groups including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and Action Against Hunger have expressed concern for the plight of the population in Karabakh.
A spokeswoman for the breakaway region said on Friday that fearful civilians in the main city Stepanakert were hiding in their basements, with Azerbaijan’s forces camped on the outskirts. The situation there was “horrible”, said Armine Hayrapetyan.
On Friday, the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, spoke to Pashinyan. “For a sustainable resolution to the conflict, the rights and security of the population in Karabakh must be guaranteed,” Scholz’s spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, said in a statement.
Ahead of the latest flare-up, Azerbaijan had imposed a de facto nine-month blockade, piling pressure on the region.
Baku said it had started sending in urgently needed aid on Friday as it seeks to cement its grip over the region it lost control of in a war in the 1990s.
Pashinyan said the “situation remains tense” in the disputed territory despite a Russian-brokered truce largely sticking. “There is a hope for some positive dynamics,” he told a cabinet meeting on Friday.
While the surrender of the separatists, after an offensive they said left 200 dead, has sparked jubilation among Azerbaijanis, it has put Pashinyan under increasing pressure.
He has faced stinging criticism for making concessions to Azerbaijan since losing swathes of territory in a six-week war in 2020.
Police said 98 people were arrested as anti-government demonstrators blocked streets in Yerevan on Friday, a third day of protests over the prime minister’s handling of the crisis.
Pashinyan himself has blamed peacekeepers from traditional regional power broker Russia – stationed around Karabakh since 2020 – for failing to avert Azerbaijan’s offensive.
Six (now nine) Russian peacekeepers were among those killed in the violence, the Azerbaijan prosecutor’s office said.
